Fossilized Dinosaur Rondelle Necklace
Description – Extremely rare fossilized dinosaur bone from the Morrison Formation here in the United States is the stunning centerpiece of this necklace. Estimated to be 150-200 million years old, it displays beautiful patterns in reds, browns and charcoal.
History – During the late Jurassic period, a great diversity of dinosaurs lived within the Morrison Basin, formed when the Rocky Mountains began forming. Hundreds of dinosaur fossils have been discovered, most of which are incomplete skeletons, making them unusable for museum or other displays.
A very, very small amount are cut and polished for collectors and an even smaller amount of those are turned into pieces suitable for jewelry use.
These are very rare fossils. No two are ever alike. During the millions of years after the death of a dinosaur, mineral-rich waters slowly seeped into the bones. Eventually, the minerals replaced the organic cellular structure of the bones with agate, quartz, hematite, iron and more.
The patterns you see in this piece are the actual bone cell patterns, preserved by the fossilization process.
